Fresno County Stream Group
Who we are
Successful regional water projects require partnership and cooperation. The Fresno County Stream Group includes the cities of Fresno and Clovis, Fresno Irrigation District, County of Fresno, and Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District – all proven leaders in forward-thinking water supply management for the Central Valley.
The County of Fresno was formed in 1856 encompassing 6,011 square miles, with a population of 1,018,241 residents. The County provides services, including elections, voter registration, law enforcement, jails, vital records, property records, tax collection, public health and social services. In addition the County serves as the local government for all unincorporated areas.
Located in the northeast quadrant of the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area, Clovis is situated in the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. Since its incorporation in 1912, Clovis has been the “Gateway to the Sierra.” Dedicated to promoting planned growth while retaining its unique western atmosphere, the City’s population has more than doubled since 1985, reaching the current level of close to 114,000, and encompassing over 23 square miles in area.
The Fresno Irrigation District (FID) is a leader in California water, serving over 200,000 acres of prime agricultural farmland in Fresno County while serving the San Joaquin Valley’s largest metropolitan area, Fresno and Clovis. FID delivers surface water to the cities’ respective water treatment plants and diverts flood flows which would otherwise inundate the nearly one million residents with storm water. All of these operations occur in FID’s system of nearly 700 miles of canals and pipelines throughout the District.
The Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District provides flood control and urban stormwater services in a 399-square mile watershed located between the Kings and San Joaquin rivers. The District is home to more than 700,000 people and includes both urban and agricultural land uses. The Fresno/Clovis urban area is protected by 3 dams and seven large detention basins, and is served by a system of more than 700 miles of pipeline and more than 150 stormwater retention basins.
The City of Fresno is the largest city in the Central Valley, covering roughly 115 square miles with a population of nearly 550,000, making it the fifth most populous city in California. Fresno was founded in 1872 by the Central Pacific Railroad Company and incorporated in 1885. The area has been a place of ethnic diversity since its beginnings and is now home to more than 70 ethnic groups.
